Plastic waste has become a real disaster for our planet
with all the efforts to process them stumble on two insoluble
problems: it is expensive, that is economically unprofitable, and
not environmentally friendly. However, scientists seem to have finally found
the solution of such an important task for our world, and found
by chance. As they say, God himself helped them in this.
In 2016, Japanese researchers found bacteria in a landfill,
who coped well with the recycling of plastic bottles.
Instead of the century, which is required for one hundred percent destruction
plastic, these bacteria took only a few days –
phenomenal, isn’t it!
Now the main thing for scientists was to identify the structure of the enzyme,
who used these bacteria and then try
synthesize it. This recently engaged many scientists
countries of the world. And here is the long-awaited victory.
Researchers at the University of Portsmouth United
Kingdom published recently in the journal Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences article on its astounding
achievements in addressing this issue. Here is what he writes about
Professor John McGehan:
We have created an enzyme capable of decomposing plastic. Moreover, we
got a substance that copes with PET bottles and other
polyethylene terephthalate products are much more efficient than
natural original produced by bacteria. This is the present
discovery of the century! Our enzyme allows you to quickly decompose plastic into
components that can then be used to produce
new similar products. And this means that you do not need to spend on
production of plastic containers fossil, that is, oil, enough
recycle already existing garbage on the planet. And we are sure
that the process of decomposition of plastic can be significantly increased.
Created by British scientists, the enzyme is non-toxic and
biodegradable, and with the help of microorganisms it can be obtained
in huge quantities with minimal cost.
By the way, in parallel with this discovery, both were made,
almost very similar to the previous one. Once one of
researchers of the Spanish Institute of Biomedicine Federica
Bertochini, an amateur beekeeper, doing the removal
parasites from the hive, found that the larvae of the wax moth (which
she put in a plastic bag and the next day did not find)
able to destroy plastic with amazing speed. As shown
further experiments conducted by Spanish scientists, only a hundred
such larvae can finish in almost 12 hours with almost 100
kilograms of plastic waste.
So, it turns out that our civilization is on the verge of an easy
and efficient recycling of plastic, which today turns
world ocean and land in real garbage dumps. That’s just
whether it will turn out real (and not on the pages of scientific journals,
it is enough to recall in this case about such delights about
biodegradable plastic) remove these landfills and not create new ones?
