It seems that the plot from the famous movie Armageddon may turn out to be a reality and one of the asteroids may indeed collide with our planet. There is no other way to explain the new mission developed by American physicists.
We are talking about a project that should demonstrate exactly how humanity can change the trajectory of an asteroid in order to protect our planets from collisions with this celestial body. The experts said that they are finalizing the design, and all the necessary technical measures have already been taken. In addition, NASA has already granted the experts permission to continue their activities.
The main element of the mission is a special ship that can produce the so-called kinetic impactor. In other words, experts want to use the impact on the asteroid to change its trajectory.
During the planning of the operation, the asteroid Didymos was chosen, which consists of two parts, with a diameter of eight hundred and one hundred meters. With the help of an innovative guidance system, the developed spacecraft will go directly to an asteroid and crash into a space body at a speed of about six kilometers per second. Note that the dimensions of the aircraft barely exceed a car. After this procedure, scientists will take measurements to determine exactly how the asteroid's trajectory was changed. Based on the data obtained, it will be possible to develop other units that will be designed to protect our planet from collisions with asteroids.
