An asteroid, about the size of a ten-story building, flew close enough to Earth on Monday morning.
The asteroid, codenamed 2017 AG13, flew within half the distance from Earth to the Moon in the early morning hours of Monday morning at 4:47 AM Moscow time. The space rock was discovered by scientists from the Catalina Sky Survey on Saturday.
The flight path animation shows that the asteroid almost crashed into our planet. Despite the fact that 2017 AG13 is not so large that a direct hit would cause catastrophic events, the entry of this cosmic body into the atmosphere of our planet could cause undesirable events similar to those that occurred in the sky over Chelyabinsk in 2013.
