Giant supercluster discovered in the vicinity of the Milky Way

An international team of astronomers has discovered one of the largest superclusters of galaxies in the universe near the Milky Way.

Professor Matthew Kolles of the Australian University stated that the Vela supercluster, which was previously obscured by the stars and dust of the Milky Way, hides a huge mass that has influenced the motion of our galaxy.

“This is one of the largest concentrations of galaxies in the Universe – possibly the largest in the vicinity of our Galaxy, but this needs to be confirmed by further study,” said Professor Kolles.

'The massive mass of the Vela supercluster may explain the difference between the measured motion of the Milky Way in space and the motion predicted from the distribution of previously mapped galaxies.'

The research is published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
