New underwater shots taken by a scientific expedition in the area of the Bermuda Triangle, unexpectedly for everyone, opened the veil of secrecy of this mysterious area on the Earth's surface.
It is about the infamous ship that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle almost 100 years ago. The fate of the ship called 'Cotopaxi' has long been shrouded in mystery and caused a lot of controversy, up to the intervention of something 'otherworldly' or paranormal. A steam-powered vessel left Charleston, South Carolina for Havana, Cuba in 1925, but Cotopaxi never reached its destination and the bodies of 32 passengers were never found.
However, a groundbreaking documentary revealed the true causes of the merchant ship wreck. According to experts, the Cotopaxi actually sank in the storm just days after it set sail.
Last year, a team of underwater researchers and marine archaeologists surveyed the shipwreck 35 nautical miles off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida, and confirmed its true identity.
The underwater shipwreck search mission was filmed in the documentary Secrets of a Shipwreck, especially for the Science Channel.
This happened when marine biologist and underwater explorer Michael Barnett contacted British historian Guy Walters to help find the mysterious ship. Here's what he said:
'Walters discovered something previously unknown about Cotopaxi's voyage. The ship sent wireless distress signals on December 1, 1925, two days after it left Charleston. '
This discovery helped the crew find the final resting place of the ship. Joe Chittelli, a diver on the expedition, told Fox News:
'Every time you dive into these sunken ships, you are trapped in a time capsule. As a rule, what has been there for over 100 years is a pile of rubble on the sand. '
However, he dismissed claims of paranormal activity surrounding the Bermuda Triangle:
'There is nothing mysterious about the so-called Devil's Triangle. It is just a kind of part of the ocean, because there the weather, currents and tropical storms form certain conditions. There is a logical explanation for all this. '
The Bermuda Triangle became known as the region where many ships suddenly and inexplicably disappeared. The stretch of water, also known as the devil's triangle, is located between Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda. It is believed that over 1000 lives have been lost in the triangle over the past century.
The mystery behind Cotopaxi's disappearance was previously revealed in Steven Spielberg's Hollywood film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where Cotopaxi was eventually discovered in the Gobi Desert. New research disproves this plot.
