The Spanish researchers reported that after deep analysis of the data obtained with the Gaia mission, they determined that there is a strange substructure in our Galaxy, which is very similar in shape to a snail. This matter is in the Milky Way and has never been discovered before.
Experts noted that such unprecedented data were collected due to the fact that the spacecraft took pictures with incredible accuracy and detail. Based on the data obtained, we can safely say that the main disk of our Galaxy about nine hundred million years ago experienced serious gravitational disturbances. Previously, this was only a hypothesis, but now it has been proven in practice.
At the moment, it remains a mystery what exactly could cause such disturbances. To answer this question, a study was made of the depth of distortion of the 'snail' spiral. This data was compared with existing models of the galaxy. As a result, it turned out that such a phenomenon could be provoked by the fact that Sagittarius passed the Milky Way, and later was completely absorbed and is now part of our Galaxy. Soon, scientists want to get full confirmation of this fact.
