NASA observes terrain changes on Mars

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter space probe has shown the destruction of part of Mars' north polar cap.

A team of MRO HiRise scientists from the University of Arizona have compiled an animation that shows the radical changes in the Martian landscape.

“This animation shows part of the collapsed slope and the remaining field of ice blocks,” planetary geologist Alfred McEwen wrote when the HiRise image was published on Friday.

On December 25, 2019, the MRO captured a second image of the altered ice block.

MRO has been in orbit around the Red Planet since 2006. The orbiter's durability and high-resolution camera made it one of the most valuable witnesses of change on Mars.

Natural processes are something in common between Mars and Earth. Gravity and the changing seasons can leave an impressive mark.
