According to astronomical data, a beautiful full moon will decorate our sky on Monday, November 14 this year, – at nightfall, looking to the east, anyone will be able to observe a bright satellite of our planet somewhat larger than usual.
Despite the fact that every month, and sometimes even twice a month, the full moon adorns the night sky, the Super Moon always causes a certain stir in society. What are the reasons for such a strong interest in this event?
One need only look at the statistics to understand that the upcoming Supermoon will make the Earth's satellite up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the smallest observed Moon (which rose last April).
Moreover, on this Supermoon, the full moon will be as close to Earth as it could have been on January 26, 1948, making it the largest in the 21st century. In the future, such an approach will take place only on November 25, 2034.
Astronomers advise not to miss this event, go outside at night and appreciate the miracle of the huge moon. It is enough to stretch your hand right in front of your face and raise your little finger. The finger is about 30 arc minutes across, the size of the full moon. On Monday night, the Supermoon will be 4 arc minutes longer than the full moon in April, which was the smallest this year.
The last observation of such an event dates back to 1948. Despite the fact that the event did not cause any excitement, many people became witnesses and victims of unpleasant events, such as the military coup in Venezuela, the bombings in Cairo, the breakdown of the truce between Indonesia and the Netherlands. In the USSR, there were several disasters: for example, 23 On December 1948, two Il-12 and TS-62 planes collided at Vnukovo airport, 23 people were killed, and already on December 30, the disaster of the TS-62 itself near Minsk took place.
In November 1948, Harry Truman became president of the United States, whose election, in fact, marked the beginning of the Cold War. Considering that in November 2016, just the other day, Donald Trump became the President of the United States, this fact has led to some confusion among some contemporaries who associate events on Earth with the Supermoon phenomenon. In their opinion, events may repeat themselves.
However, professional astronomers advise not to escalate the situation and just enjoy the spectacle of the Moon, since for most people the gap between such astronomical phenomena allows you to enjoy the spectacle only once in a lifetime.
