Surprising round structure made of mammoth bones discovered

Scientists have determined that mammoth bones are 20,000 years old.

Found at a Russian site called 'Kostensky 11', the mammoth bone structure has been radiocarbon dated to over 20,000 years old, potentially classifying it as the oldest human-built structure in the region.

The study, compiled in collaboration with international research institutions and published Tuesday in the journal Antiquity, shows that 51 mandibles and 64 individual mammoth skulls were used to create an unusual 9-meter diameter wall structure.

In addition to mammoth skulls, various bones of a reindeer, horse, bear, wolf and fox have been found.

“Kostenki 11 is a rare example of Paleolithic hunter-gatherer structures living in these harsh environments,” said Dr. Alexander Pryor, an archaeologist at the University of Exeter and lead author of the study.

'What could have brought ancient hunter-gatherers to this site? It is possible that mammoths and humans could have migrated en masse to the area because there was a natural source of fresh, unfrozen water during the winter. '

Charred wood was also found in the structure, leading scientists to conclude that people burned wood and bones for fuel. In addition to wood, scientists also found 50 burnt plant seeds at the site.

'Archeology shows us how our ancestors survived in this desperately cold and hostile environment at the height of the last ice age. Most other places in similar latitudes in Europe were by this time abandoned, but these groups managed to adapt to the weather conditions, find food, shelter and water. '
