A stunning view of the Earth from space provided by the space agency NASA. The high-resolution footage, which has also been compiled into the video, was captured using the new orbiting satellite GOES-16.
Below is one of the most detailed images of the Earth's full disk, which is updated every 15 minutes. The incredible view was captured on Jan 5 at 1:07 am ET.
The GOES-16 satellite, launched on November 19, 2016, orbits 35,900 km above Earth, a position called geostationary orbit. For example, the International Space Station (ISS) is 350 kilometers higher.
This orbit allows the satellite to track changes in the atmosphere, land and ocean. According to NOAA, GOES-16 is capable of imaging in more wavelengths of light, four times the resolution of either satellite, and with five times the refresh rate.
