The author of several books about the Tunguska meteorite Andrey Olkhovatov is sure that the events of February 15 are another reason for humanity to ponder.
Commentary by Andrei Olkhovatov – candidate physical and mathematical sciences, researcher of the Tunguska catastrophe, author of several books on the Tunguska meteorite, co-author of the book “Tunguska radiance.”
This morning an event took place over the south of the Urals, which will enter astronomy textbooks. And most likely, and not only astronomy. For the first time in the history we know of a collision a cosmic body with our planet has led to more or less noticeable material damage, noticeable number of injured (we hope only easily affected).

In this video you can clearly see how the glass falls from blast wave
In 1954, an American received bruises on her hands and hips when a small meteorite pierced the roof of her house and hit her. In Chelyabinsk in the same case (we will call it that), judging by the preliminary and incomplete reports, many people received cuts from broken glasses. I would like to hope that this was the case.

A few words on the nature of the phenomenon. Judging by the posted video, we we deal with getting into the atmosphere and subsequent destruction in it space (meteor) body. To judge its size by it is difficult to initial reports size of several meters. The chances of finding fragments of it are very high, then we can talk about the Chelyabinsk meteorite (although if fragments will be found in another locality, then the name may change).
It seems that the Chelyabinsk event has become the most documented big phenomenon in Russia. Therefore, I will venture to express confidence that matching a large number of surveillance camera records will allow you to very accurately determine the trajectory of the cosmic body and some other options. Then you can try to understand whether it is connected with the asteroid 2012 DA14 or not.
Another interesting fact is curious:
“Space monitoring devices detected flashes in the lower atmospheric layers, “said the deputy chief of the information management EMERCOM of Russia Elena Smirnykh.
What kind of “devices” is not specified. In the U.S. military from time to time release data from their missile launch tracking satellites and nuclear explosions, in those cases when they spot bright fireballs. Maybe the Russian military will follow suit.
By the way, the Chelyabinsk race car generated a powerful acoustic disturbance in an atmosphere that can be detected by barographs on distances of hundreds or more kilometers. It’s good not to forget about this data, as well as about the data of seismic stations.
However, already one result of the Chelyabinsk car is known. Humanity is defenseless against such phenomena, although they are very are rare. Nevertheless, maybe this is another reason to think, and not is it better for humanity to work together to prevent such phenomena, instead of preparing weapons for the destruction of a friend friend?
