Asteroid 2012 DA14 was discovered in February 2012 at Spanish Observatory La Sagra. Calculations immediately showed that through year, this object will fly by at a minimum distance from the Earth – about 27.7 thousand kilometers from the surface. This is the largest heavenly a body that would approach our planet so close for the whole history of observations. The mass of the asteroid is about 130 thousand tons, and the explosion that would have occurred if it had fallen to Earth would have been comparable to the Tunguska catastrophe.
