An international team of astronomers studying Lovejoy’s comet, managed to make an amazing discovery. It turned out that the heavenly body contains small amounts of sugar and alcohol.

This is the first time in the history of science Earth ethanol, an integral ingredient of all alcoholic drinks. The find has already been taken as another evidence that life on our planet was brought alone or several comets that fell on her.

An employee of the Paris Observatory Nicholas Beaver, who became one of authors of the study, tells that Lovejoy’s comet contains on the current moment is about as much alcohol as there is in five hundred bottles of wine. In addition, the celestial body was also glycolaldehyde is one of the simplest types of sugar. Ethanol as scientists recall, is a waste product yeast and bacteria. Most likely, on a comet there are similar terrestrial microorganisms that convert sugar to alcohol. Other in words, we can say that on a celestial body moving in space processes similar to moonshining occur.

Comet Lovejoy C / 2014 Q2 was spotted on August 17 last year by Australian astronomer Terry Lovejoy. Before the specialist discovered four more comets. In addition to ethyl alcohol and glycolaldehyde, the celestial body also contains water, oxygen, simple hydrocarbons, acetaldehyde, formic acid, ethylene glycol, sulfur and various nitrogen-containing compounds.

Finding complex organic molecules on Lovejoy’s comet, like mentioned above makes the theory that simple bacteria that evolved over time into all the organisms known to us were brought to Earth precisely comets.

The results of this study were published a few days. back to the pages of the American scientific journal “Science Advances. ”
