This double asteroid is not dangerous to the Earth, therefore, scientists decided to slightly “destroy” it. The main task is not to destroy the asteroid, but try to influence it trajectory.
The basis for this experiment was the mission of Hayabusa-2, during which it turned out that the asteroid Ryugu has an increased fragility. During the impact on the asteroid, an impressive the size of a crater, and regolith, like sand, quenched the force of this blow. Here scientists clutched their heads: how will they behave at all? asteroids in such strikes, and will there be any sense in the new concept “knocking down”?

Didim space object includes a large asteroid measuring 780 meters and a small rock that revolves around him at a speed of 1 revolution in 11.92 hours. This rock is sometimes called the moon of Didim. It is planned that the DART probe will collide with this object at a speed of 23760 km / h, while not breaking it, but only a few centimeters per second changing the speed.
The DART percussion device is scheduled to be launched in 2021, and in September 2022 probe must ram Didim. If everything goes well successfully, then in 2023 a research will be sent to Didim Hera station, which will carefully record all the consequences unusual experiment.
