In one of the sections of Mars, the magnetic field is ten times stronger, than scientists thought before.
InSight NASA Probe Detects Magnetic Oscillations more than a year exploring the surface of the Red Planet. The probe is equipped special magnetic sensor capable of taking field measurements at close range.
University of British Columbia Professor Catherine Johnson stated that the data obtained from the surface of Mars give more accurate representation of magnetization in small areas. Besides of this, the expert noted, the magnetic field at the landing site was 10 times stronger than research satellites showed earlier.
According to scientists, on Mars billions of years ago was magnetic field however about four billion years ago by unknown reasons, it disappeared, as if turned off. The planet has lost its atmosphere, and with it protection from cosmic radiation.
The new data received by the InSight probe suggests that residual magnetic radiation still comes from old stones, which are at a depth of several meters to several kilometers. Researchers intend to find out exactly where they are sources of magnetic radiation.
In addition, it became known that the solar wind affects the magnetic field of Mars, causing noticeable oscillations in the local magnet field. The fact is that Mars does not have a global magnetic fields that would protect against solar magnetic storms.
The probe also received some strange data, finding that around midnight on the Red Planet, fluctuations in the magnetic fields that are thought to occur under the influence of moving solar wind. To finally find out scientists are getting ready to use another research probe, designed to study the atmosphere of Mars.
