At the end of January, it is planned to launch into orbit the first in the world. artificial Earth satellite with laser data transmission. Launch will be carried out by the Proton launch vehicle from the cosmodrome Baikonur.
The main advantage of the new satellite Eutelsat 9B, owned Eurostar E3000 family, – SpaceDataHighway system. It’s a laser data transfer at a speed of almost two gigabits per second. In a day such a system is capable of transmitting up to fifty terabytes of all kinds information (video, images, sensors collected data from satellites, drones, aircraft carrying various observations, as well as working in orbit and future space stations). Moreover, all data will be transmitted to steady mode and practically in real time. For comparison let’s say that the current systems on satellites carry out information transfer with a delay of three to four hours.
Thanks to public-private partnerships Airbus Defense and Space and the European Space Agency made possible the implementation of such a grandiose project, which cost almost half a billion euros.
Satellite-mounted EDRS-A communication node, Allows you to transfer data to all flying aircraft over Europe, America and Africa. Global laser coverage the connection of the whole Earth is planned with the launch of the second and third such modules – EDRS, which will be put into orbit of the Earth before 2020 year.
