Unusual “New Year’s gift” from astronauts ISS

This photo can be considered a Christmas present to all of us. Internet users from ISS astronauts, although the picture was taken was long before the winter holiday – just now he, as they say, fit, and NASA staff posted it for review in the form a small but pleasant holiday surprise.

The reservoir in the form of a New Year tree captured on it is a lake Duncan, which is located in the Kurdistan province of Iraq. Greenish the surface of the dam stands out well against the background of tan hills, and spirals of flowering phytoplankton also create on it a peculiar pattern that can be taken together from the height of the cosmic stations for Christmas decorations.

The picture was taken by the German astronaut Alexander Gerst, who was the first to notice the similarity of the Iraqi lake with the Christmas tree and hastened to remove this little miracle for his collection of interesting snapshots. And the photo really became not just interesting, but good New Year’s gift for everyone who attentively watches work international space station.

By the way, we note that Lake Duncan is man-made, it appeared in the period between 1954-59 years – after construction in this place dams.
