On the 61st Martian day (Sol 61 – October 7, 2012 at Earth) the robot scooped up Martian soil with a scoop. I got into the frame filled scoop about 5 by 7 centimeters in size, part the robot and the surface on which it stands. And on this NASA experts spotted some object that clearly stood out from the surrounding background. They called him – bright object.

“We just don’t know what it is!” – admitted to NASA. AND a few days could not identify the object photographed by a robot Curiosity at own wheels.

Close-up black and white photo taken with special camera for microphotography (ChemCam: Remote Micro-Imager), did not add clarity. On the contrary. This is the brightest object has become similar, excuse me, either to shrimp, or to cockroach. The situation cleared up on October 11 (Sol 65) after Curiosity photographed a bright object with a MAHLI camera. In the color photo, it became clear that the bright object wasn’t cockroach. In fact, where are the cockroaches on Mars? Similarity to shrimp, however, has survived. But NASA decided that the shot a piece of plastic – like a plastic film. Its size is 13 millimeters. First of all, experts sinned on a piece putting forward the most plausible explanations. Another question: from why did a piece fall off? From which object? There is no definite answer. However, experts decided to consider: if something fell off, then not from Mars rover. It couldn’t. There’s nothing to fall off there. A piece – from some details that participated in the landing operations. Maybe from thermal protection. Or from a jet platform. Or even from a parachute. And the wind brought him just where the robot began to scoop priming. By the way, two scoops of soil, recruited before, are recognized unsuitable for subsequent analyzes – they could supposedly get into them others are smaller pieces from Earth. Decided to dial the third scoop.
