In Orthodoxy, it is believed that regular reading of psalms from the first day after death until the moment of burial gives the soul strength and helps it to go through the posthumous ordeals.
At different times, popular beliefs have appeared regarding the reason why it is impossible to leave the deceased without the supervision of one:
- The deceased, left in the house alone for the night, can 'come to life' – this will lead to the fact that his spirit will not be able to leave the apartment in the future and find peace. Bringing will disturb the peace of the tenants and attract troubles to the house.
- The dead person must be under regular supervision before burial so that black magicians cannot take possession of one of his personal belongings, which will later be useful to them for performing rituals. It was believed that the objects used in washing and preparing the deceased harbor destructive energy and are used in many love spells to induce damage in love relationships or deteriorate financial well-being.
- It is believed that the deceased can open his eyes and frighten the people around him. Therefore, relatives sit nearby to close his eyelids if necessary. In addition, there is a belief that a person who looks into open eyes will soon become very sick and die.
It is also important to take into account the fact that the deceased must be carried out of the house with his feet forward – this will show the soul of the deceased the further path of travel and guarantee its repose. It is also important not to forget to hang the mirrors for at least three days from the moment of death, otherwise the spirit will remain in them and will continue to appear to the residents.
People have different attitudes towards these traditions, but it is likely that following them will help prevent the risk of unforeseen problems in the home and deterioration of well-being.
