Despite the fact that it is the 21st century, many people still believe in omens – a kind of warning from distant ancestors. Our ancestors sacredly revered a kind of warnings, believing that they would protect against trouble, help in difficult times and contribute to good luck in business. One of the superstitions that has come down to our time says: “You cannot bring reeds home.” 
The Slavs believed that it is impossible to bring reeds into the house, as this can lead to the absence of men in a woman's life.
Why can't you keep reeds at home?
Since ancient times, people have used dry plants to decorate their homes, as a building material for their homes, or made a kind of amulets from them, which they hung on the walls and under the roof of the hut, however, reeds in the house were for many a strict taboo, and here's why:
- The Slavs believed that reeds should not be brought into the house, since this could lead to the absence of men in a woman's life.
- Since cut reeds are a dead plant, they can lead to a string of setbacks for the dwellers.
- The presence of dry reeds in the house is a bad omen. Since ancient times, it was believed that a dried plant expels happiness, luck and mutual understanding from home.
- Keeping artificial reeds at home was also prohibited due to the high probability of lingering and incomprehensible ailments in households.
- For farmers or those with their own farmland, bringing reeds into their homes meant a dry and lean summer.
- And also, according to legend, the reeds in the house make the dwelling a refuge for the evil spirits that live in the swamp.
It is worth noting that only the Slavs have such a negative attitude towards the plant.
- In ancient Greece, this plant was considered a symbol of power; wicker chairs were made of it, which symbolized the throne and designated the place of the head of the family.
- The Greeks, however, considered him the beginning of all beginnings and always brought him into the house if the mistress had problems with pregnancy.
- The Egyptians were extremely respectful of the thickets of this plant, since it grows only with a large amount of water, which is so necessary in arid countries.
Good omens
This plant is mysterious and controversial, however, not all signs associated with it are bad. There are also those superstitions that convince that reeds can not only be stored in the house, but also necessary:
- A bouquet placed in a hallway or corridor in a conspicuous place will protect the house from external negativity.
- Several reeds, located in the pantry or on the balcony, are designed to protect the peace of the owners and help improve relations in the house.
- The scattered fluff from the plant promises that matchmakers will soon come to the house.
- On the down of this plant they were guessing. To find out from which side the betrothed would arrive, it was necessary to go out on a moonlit and windy night and scatter the fluff, in which direction the wind blows – from that side and wait for the matchmakers.
- A pipe made from this plant will protect the house from evil spirits. Our ancestors believed that the pipe would help its master in every possible way, whispering the right decisions.
- To push your loved one to a crucial step (to propose or agree to get married), you need to give him a bouquet tied with a red ribbon.

What does it mean if you dream about reeds?
After seeing this plant in a dream, many people think about what this dream means. In parallel with real life, there are signs associated with reeds.
- To see a wildly flowering plant in a dream is a sign of good luck and successful completion of business.
- Green (not ripe) plants seen in a dream reflect calmness and peace of mind. The image guarantees the success of any undertakings and a positive attitude.
- If young people who are not in a relationship are dreaming, then this may mean that soon they will meet their soul mate.
- For married people, this plant in a dream promises love and long-term warm feelings for a partner.
- Covering the roof – to the successful completion of all pressing matters.
- Dried or cut off promises misfortune, and burning to deception and betrayal.
You can believe in the signs that forbid putting reeds in the house, or you can consider them just grandmother's tales, but one fact remains unchanged: before decorating a home with such a bouquet, it is necessary to treat the plant with an antiseptic solution and sprinkle with hairspray, this will prevent possible troubles associated with long cleaning or incomprehensible ailments.
