Who of us has not heard the phrase that you cannot whistle at home, otherwise there will be no money. Few have thought about its meaning, meanwhile, superstition has deep roots. Our ancestors considered whistling to be the language of evil spirits and a harbinger of misfortune.
Why can't you whistle at home?
Our ancestors had a very negative attitude to such an occupation.
- For a long time, booing has meant disapproval, indignation, indignation. And the word 'whistle' means something that quickly vanished. Hence the omen appeared, prophesying the disappearance of money.
- Our ancestors considered whistling to be the language of evil spirits and a harbinger of misfortune. Hence the belief that sound is able to attract the attention of evil forces to the house.
- According to another version, the whistle is able to expel its guardian from the house – a brownie who, leaving, could take with him good luck and material wealth.
- Residents of individual houses with stove heating are familiar with the phenomenon of wind whistling in a chimney. Unfamiliar with the nature of physical phenomena, our ancestors saw in the appearance of an extraneous sound a bad omen, signifying a natural disaster. Life experience told them that whistling in the house does not bode well.
- Whistling was associated in pagan culture with the sound of the wind. In this regard, one cannot but recall the sailors who believed that such an action could interrupt the calm. The sound should be quiet so that a strong storm does not whistle instead of a favorable breeze.
- It is forbidden for believers to make this sound in the house. Orthodox Christians still have a sign that the Mother of God is turning away from the whistling. It is the Mother of God who is considered the patroness of the hearth and material well-being.
The sailors of Western Europe were strictly forbidden to whistle on the ship. It was believed that this could attract the Sea Devil.
From theater history
Signs associated with whistling are not always tied to money. For example, it is not customary for actors to whistle in the theater; it is believed that this will lead to the failure of the performance. Today this is explained by the fact that the theater is the second home for the members of the troupe, and it is sinful to insult it with a whistle.
Popular wisdom has come up with many signs, but almost every one has a kind of instruction on how to get around the bad consequences. It is very easy to neutralize the negative effect of whistling. To do this, it is enough to turn the whole body counterclockwise three times, symbolically winding back time.
