The building in which there was once a tuberculosis sanatorium Waverly Hills (Louisville, Kentucky), today is the most popular of the abandoned places in the country and the most visited and mysterious object. Thrill lovers ride here from all over the planet.
Tunnel of death
Built in 1926, this sanatorium practiced the most “advanced” treatment methods. By the way, then tuberculosis was incurable, so the good intentions of the doctors turned into a tragedy for of many people.
It was believed that patients should spend as much as possible time in the air, so patients were constantly forced be on the street, and in winter they slept with the windows open.

The hospital had a very high mortality rate. To hide from patients the number of dead, corpses were transported through underground tunnel that went directly to the railway station. Often, waiting for the composition piled up in one heap of the body for days were at the exit.
But in 1943, Zelman Waxman, an American microbiologist, Found a cure for a terrible disease – streptomycin. With tuberculosis was finally done away and the Waverly Hills was empty and in 1961 the year the sanatorium was closed.
However, the building did not stand closed for long. A year later it was renamed “Woodhaven,” and a nursing home was placed there and geriatric treatment center. Soon rumors circulated around the city that sick old people are being abused. Supposedly on them conducted various scientific experiments, for example, irradiated radiation or used shock therapy. It is not known how much these rumors corresponded to the truth, however, during the checks revealed many violations, and the case was referred to court. In 1980 the institution was closed forever.
Ghosts instead of Jesus
The land and Waverly Hills itself were auctioned, and in In 1983, the building was even going to be rebuilt as a prison, however this project failed. Finally Waverly Hills bought the current one master. He wanted to demolish the existing buildings, and in their place to establish a gigantic statue of Jesus Christ that would be superior the size of a similar statue in Rio de Janeiro.
