The corpse of a man who was swallowed by an unknown hole in the earth, perhaps still wants to get to the surface. it not a script for a horror movie, but a famous urban legend from the English city of Stoke-on-Trent, in which the real can turn out to be much more than it seems at first glance.

On Saturday, December 3, 1903, local resident Thomas Holland at 7 o’clock in the morning I went to work and fell into a hole that unexpectedly formed on the pavement right under his feet. 56 year old screaming candle fell down, and no one else saw him. Ever passed since centuries, and the unfortunate body is still deep under ground.

Rescuers felt that the man had failed in the old mine about 40 meters deep, filled with poisonous gas, and flatly refused to go down. They suggested that Thomas instantly died in the fall, but some witnesses believed that Holland at first he could survive, and he could still be saved. But instead, workers were called in to quickly fill up the pit, and city life took its course.

Perhaps it was from here that the myth grew that under St. John’s street in the north of Stoke-on-Trent, there is either a restless spirit, or a real zombie generated by Thomas who fell into the ground Holland. Rumor has it that at night you can hear quiet blows and groans from under the ground, like someone locked below under thickness of asphalt, trying to break out. And annually on December 3 here they supposedly see a strange haze in the morning, taking a vague appearance human silhouette.

British historian Fred Lee wrote in his book Legends and Myths Staffordshire “that in 1903, when this tragedy happened, the townspeople wanted to lower a kerosene lamp into the proposed mine on a rope to see if you can somehow help the fallen, however, the local miner cried out that under no circumstances should this be done it is impossible, as underground fuel accumulations may explode gas. One of the witnesses even claimed to have shone down and saw Thomas trying to climb up a steep stone. The skin of a wounded person or already a dead man was pale, and his eyes – completely red with blood.

Mr. Holland’s death then shocked the whole country and several days did not leave the front pages of newspapers. For the first time in county history the funeral ceremony took place on a busy road. Despite the fact that it was raining, many citizens came to say goodbye to the deceased.

Thomas was a widower – his wife passed away in 1886. Have spouses there are four children left.

Perhaps the British, who have a special love for stories about ghosts, they simply could not think of some mystic here. Or maybe – who knows – this mysticism really has a place to be, and the spirit of Thomas Holland, absorbed in a mysterious hole, is still trying to break out …
