The other day in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, which is part of Tyumen region of the Russian Federation, was a scientific expedition. Specialists visited the Bovanenkovskoye oil and gas condensate field and examined the famous Yamal hole, formed as believed to be due to an underground methane explosion. It turned out: a huge pit is gradually filled with water, which will soon allow it turn into a decent lake.
It is reported that since the beginning of this year, the water level in the funnel climbed almost ten meters and the hole continues fill. Now researchers are sure that on the Yamal Peninsula many lakes appeared in this way. Craters, more likely total, are formed thanks to the so-called pneumatic claps – underground gas explosions. After some time, the rainfall fills pits, and they turn into small fresh water bodies.

The Yamal Hole was discovered last year. Its diameter on the outside the contour is sixty meters, on the inside – about magpie. Rock fragments scattered around due to explosion observed at a distance of one hundred and twenty meters from the future lakes. Simple onlookers are forbidden to approach the hole, since it the edges are constantly crumbling. To examine the hole, specialists previously had to use climbing equipment. Now, as it seems, diving suits will also have to be added to it: a huge funnel becomes a lake.
American scientist Chris Forgville said his Russian colleagues are right – holes are formed in the ground due to gas explosions, moreover, this phenomenon is directly related to climate change on the planet. The foreigner predicted that such phenomena would observed in Russia now more and more often.
