Oceana International Human Rights Organization revealed massive fraud during a two-year study, carried out from 2010 to 2012. Oceana analyzed DNA of 1215 fish samples acquired at 674 different points sales – from grocery stores to fashionable restaurants – to 21 US states. As it turned out, 33% of the studied material is not corresponds to what is indicated on the labels or in the menu, with 33 % is an average indicator, in some regions it reaches level of 90%. The biggest scammers in the fish trade it turned out, oddly enough, specialized sushi restaurants. In them one fish is given for another in 74% of cases. Followed by “others restaurants “(38%) and grocery stores (18%), reports French edition of Le Monde. Most often unscrupulous suppliers and sellers “darken” with the most popular among consumers fish – perch and tuna. So, scientists have discovered only 7 real red perch samples out of 120 analyzed, and 57% sold “tuna” was not at all tuna. Most often for tuna give escolar (gray delicious mackerel), which, despite edibility can be extremely dangerous for human health due to ability to accumulate toxins. In Japan, as in Italy, escolar is completely banned, and in the United States in the early 1990s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a newsletter recommending not to import this fish after receiving a large number of complaints of diarrhea associated with her consumption. According to figures released by Oceana, 90% of those consumed in US seafood and fish are imported and therefore their origin is extremely difficult to track. At the same time, the FDA control over quality of products covers only 2% of this volume, and the quality of the rest of the product lies with the conscience of the suppliers, sellers and restaurateurs. In addition to replacing one variety of fish with another Oceana has recorded other fraud options in this industry. Researchers report that product prices are unjustifiable overpriced, endangered species are on sale, and fish, grown in artificial conditions, pass off as wild. Oceana is international conservation organization oceans and aquatic biodiversity. In December 2012, this society already published a report exposing fish fraud trade in New York. Ksenia Plotnikova
