In permafrost in the north-east of Siberia, an ancient extremely dangerous virus called “Mollivirus sibericum”. Scientists report that the age of the virus found exceeds 30 thousand years, and soon they will study it. This is the fourth the type of ancient viruses that have been detected in recent 12 years.
According to research, the detected virus has large compared to similar organisms, and may pose a danger in the case of permafrost thawing Siberia – this is stated by a scientist from the National Center for Scientific research in France Chantal Abergel which is co-author of a new study.
In order to call the virus relatively large, its size should be more than half a micrometer. Virus detected in Siberia reaches 0.6 micrometers in length.
Before you start studying the virus, scientists should find out exactly what potential danger it carries for life people and animals. They also remind that various changes in climate cause activation of a wide variety of microscopic pathogenic organisms. Today, the Arctic and those close to it subarctic regions subject to global warming at an accelerated pace. It is because of this that the preservation of permafrost and all the microscopic organisms that are stored in its bowels, is in great danger.
“Just a couple of dangerous viral organisms capable of to revive the whole pathogenic system, “- says one of the co-authors conducted research by Jean-Michel Claveri, a scientist from research center in France.
In fact, the discovered giant does not pose a danger to human life, as it refers to the infected unicellular amoeba formed in the Upper Paleolithic or in end of the stone age. Mollivirus sibericum was found in sample soil at a depth of approximately 98 feet (30 meters) below level the surface of the earth.
Areas where giant sized viral objects were found, always attracted industrial enterprises with their mineral resources (heavily oil). In case of melting ice, in these regions will begin large-scale mining operations and oil.
“Not taking into account all the possible dangers in the development of these regions, we can face an extreme global problem – the awakening of microscopic organisms that were considered destroyed and safe, “the scientist recalls.
Together with a team of researchers, Clever will try again revive the virus found, but in the appropriate laboratory conditions when using safe equipment and additional funds. Biologists have already conducted similar experiments, and namely, in 2004, a team of American scientists was found and revived spaniard virus that once killed a huge amount people around the world.
