In the Adriatic Sea, near Croatia there is an island Ballenac, very tiny and amazing at the same time. Almost unique, because it is a bird’s eye view looks like a thumbprint.

The area of this oval island is only about one and a half square kilometers, but this is not his feature and it does not make him similar to a fingerprint, and a network of artificial stone walls.

The coastline of Croatia, like many other Western European countries, for example, Scotland, England, Ireland, is covered by such low stone barriers that served in antiquity for local farmers marker land boundaries. Can you imagine how much effort it took to free this rocky ground from stones in order to cultivate on it agricultural crops. In this case, the stones were used for creating such amazing fences.

Of course, they served not only as markers of territories, in the first the line protected farmers’ crops from the sea wind, giving the opportunity to grow something on this foreshore. it there was hard daily work: even the stone walls of this island tell us about it: their length is tens of kilometers with a length of the islands are only one and a half kilometers away.

It is also surprising how people before could lay so filigree stones, using neither cement, nor any other bunch – and walls at the same time they are preserved for centuries, and they don’t care for either wind or rain nor even human intervention …

Balenac is Croatia’s small true miracle. It’s no coincidence that this “thumbprint” inscribed on the World Heritage List UNESCO.
