In a study conducted by the Berlin Institute for Evaluation risk, it turned out that regular descaling in espresso machines leads to the release of high doses of lead, which then gets into drinks. The testing involved coffee machines with manual water supply or connected to the water supply, most often used for making coffee in public places nutrition. By measuring the level of lead in water that has passed processing in a coffee machine, immediately after descaling, scientists have discovered a hundredfold excess of the permissible content lead. Subsequent tests carried out a few days after descaling also revealed an unacceptably high content lead five times the norm.
Strong cleaning agents that are used in limescale removal, come into contact with workers the surface of the machine, which leads to the release of lead, which then gets into drinks.
In this case, the volumes of lead released into drinks in capsule coffee machines used at home are minimal and not pose a serious health hazard.
