This Icelandic island, steeply rising from the waters of the bay The skaga fjord is the remainder of a 700,000-year-old volcano and consists mainly of volcanic tuff.

Draungay seems impregnable, and indeed, far from everyone manages to climb to its top. According to ancient legend, the fjord was once crossed by giants roaming at night – the man and woman their cow was with. Suddenly caught by the dawn, all three turned to stone. At the sight of the gloomy cliffs of Draungey, 180 meters high over the sea, it seems that the island is not inhabited by anyone and lifeless. However, the one who manages to get to the top will quite surprised by the huge variety of birds nesting on these the rocks.

In the eighth century, Icelandic birders began to visit Draunei in order to catch and profitably sell the local birds. However for unknown reason, these people began to disappear, why the island gained notoriety. Rumors have come that they live on it trolls killing uninvited guests. Sometimes to go down to nests, catchers used ropes – and they are inexplicably broke off, after which people fell from a cliff down. When looking at ragged ropes it seemed that someone had specially cut them a sharp object …

Now people were afraid not only to step on the island, but even get close to him. So it was until the Icelandic bishop Gudmund Arason the Good did not go to the sinister island to find out what is going on there.

Upon arrival at Draungey, the bishop moved to his northern tip. There he securely fastened the ropes he brought with him and began to descend from the cliff, carefully watching everything that going around. Suddenly the holy father saw how from a crevice a huge, hairy hand stretched out and began to cut taut ropes. The mysterious creature managed to cut two of of them, the third remained whole by the bishop’s fervent prayer, which saved his life.

Returning from his dangerous journey, Goodmund Arason reported that, with the exception of the northern part, all of Draungay was consecrated. Since then, the northern tip of the island is considered disastrous for human place where trolls live. And today, none of climbers will not dare to climb the cliffs of Draungey from its north side. Icelanders believe that magical people still live here underground creatures who prefer not to show themselves to people on eyes, but vigilantly watching them …
