A team of specialists in the field of dendrology found in the north Greece Bosnian pine over a thousand years old. This pine is like scientists concluded, is the oldest living tree in Europe, and also one of the oldest trees on Earth. She was contemporary of the emperor of Byzantium Konstantin Bagryanorodny and Grand Duke of Kiev Igor Rurikovich.
Paul Krusic, who works at the University of Stockholm and is one of the authors of the find, says that this tree, named Adonis in honor of the ancient Greek character, truly amazing Being so complex and vulnerable in its own way, it has survived for centuries in an extremely troubled area inhabited by people already over three millennia.
Bosnian pine tree stands alone on a hill near which there is a remarkable forest with many elderly trees. They are not as old as Adonis, however the age of some of them nevertheless approaching the mark of a thousand years.
Longevity trees are not only natural monuments
Using modern technology, scientists took a sample of wood pine trees and counted a thousand seventy-five tree rings in it. This is exactly the exact age of Adonis. Experts say that such trees are of great interest to science. First, researchers can try to figure out the secret. longevity plants. And secondly, similar wood with hundreds tree rings is considered a kind of climate record – the tree is able to tell scientists about the events that took place during his life. Before such “chronicles” were told to people of science, for example, about the most powerful supernova explosion that hit our planet in 774, and allowed to determine why the Mongol troops retreated in 1242 during their mass campaign to Europe.
Dendrologists are amazed that the oldest tree in Europe is in that part of it where conflicts between empires constantly took place, trying to conquer Greece and the Balkans. For example, when Adonisu five hundred years old, the territory on which it grows was captured by the Ottoman Turks. And when the pine tree “celebrated” thousandth anniversary, Greece was occupied by German Nazis and their allies. Survive the mass battles of trees very difficult…
