The name sounds like an idea for a third-rate horror movie, however researchers at washington state university claim that the so-called “exploding head syndrome” is a real mental disorder that is most often remains undiagnosed.

“This phenomenon has hardly been studied,” says an assistant professor at Washington. Brian Sharples University. – I had to meet in my practice of people with symptoms of this disorder seven times a night. ”

People with this syndrome hear sudden, very loud sounds. – as if a door slams, a firecracker explodes or sounds shot. This usually happens when a person prepares for bed. Pops do not cause physical harm, but can be very scary.

It seems to some that the “explosion” occurs in one ear, some – that in both ears, but most are sure that cotton occurs inside the head. At the same time, some of the sufferers see bright flashes, like lightning.

“As a result, some people have fear every time, when the time of sleep is approaching, ”Sharpless explained.

While researchers do not know how widespread this problem, but suggest that in many cases, doctors simply don’t give similar stories to their patients due attention.

For the first time, the term “exploding head syndrome” appeared in one of articles of the scientific journal “Lancet” for 1988, however a description “Pops in the brain” appeared back in 1920.
