In 2001, an American fireman Patrick Hardison received horrific burns in the service that disfigured him before unrecognizable. The man’s eyelids, nose, lips and ears burned, his skull became literally covered with deformed skin. Hardison survived but such appearance did not allow him to return to society. Friends looked at Patrick through tears, strangers turned away, and the little children were scared.

When an American fourteen years later was offered to become one of the first people who will be completely transplanted the faces of deceased donors, he did not ponder the answer for long. The operation took place exactly a year back in August 2015. Doctors were not sure that the body the patient will receive donor tissue and will be able to take over time control a new face, but still decided to take risks. Eventually everything turned out in the best way.

Mississippi Forty-Two Today Not Only lives a full life and is no longer shy of his external species, but also plans to return to the fire department of his native cities. According to Hardison, he’s just fine now, as before the incident, and even better, because after so terrible life test, he fully understood how important for a person human appearance. Patrick still does not immediately recognize himself in in the mirror and even jokes that some parts of his new face are like him more than the old.

Before transplantation, a disfigured man was not able to independently do a lot of what for any healthy human is the norm. The American couldn’t breathe through his nose and mouth, therefore, a breathing tube was inserted into his trachea. He could not have and used a feeding tube for this. Due to lack century, the former fireman did not blink, and his eyes were constantly watery. Vision deteriorated, and sleep with constantly open eyes was incredibly painful and restless. Deprived of auricles, the American began to hear hard, because he needed auditory prostheses. In short, the quality of such a life was very low.

Full face transplant

Currently, only forty earthlings have received a facial transplant. Hardison’s case can be called unique, since he does not transplanted part of a stranger’s face, and made a full-blown transplantation. Preparations for the operation went on for a whole year, and surgery took twenty-six hours. Doctors the patients even had to grind off the bones of the skull place a donor face on it.

Today Patrick feels so good that he leads in perplexity of the most optimistic doctors. His body is not showed no signs of rejection of new tissues, and this is how known to be the first transplant hazard organs. The former fireman was on a strict diet for a long time, took immunosuppressants and did not appear in the sun, performing all medical prescriptions. Doctors are still afraid of tissue rejection, however, it is recognized that this risk is now very small.

The man claims that he really “came to life” only now, when his body is completely accustomed to a new face. American drives a car and even moonlighting a few days a week. He is serious thinking about returning to their previous place of work. True, Hardison now wants not to fight fire, but to render motivational psychological assistance to other victims to the fireman.

Patrick plans to visit David Rodebo’s family next fall, who died at the age of twenty colliding on a bike with a car. It was his face that was transplanted to the American who suffered in the fire.
