Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark gave a little disabled boy missing hand – from the “iron man”.
Such a touching video appeared on the Internet. For seven year old Alexa, who was born in an underdeveloped right limb, unique prosthesis was made on a 3D printer – scientist’s invention Alberta Manero (University of Central Florida) in his project Limbitless. This collective project is successfully moving forward in Recently, Microsoft’s OneNote division.
The actor himself accompanied this video with warm words: Alex is very mobile kid, and I was pleased to make him so wonderful gift, so special thanks to the creators of these excellent and inexpensive prostheses.
Note that before such prostheses cost at least forty thousand dollars, and insurance companies rarely ever covered these huge expenses as children quickly grow out of their dentures. 3D-printed artificial hand cost just three hundred with a few dollars.
The prosthesis is easily controlled by the biceps impulses, i.e. becomes a pretty mobile and comfortable hand, much better than old dentures for a lot of money.
Note that 3D prostheses are only one of the projects Microsoft is currently developing in this direction.
