In Northern California USA on Lake Berrissa Reservoir (the largest body of water in Napa County) there is a unique spillway – 22 meter diameter hole through which 75 meter pipe excess water is discharged after heavy rains.

This object was built 60 years ago, its official name completely different – the spillway of Morning Glory, but the locals, and then and journalists, began to call the funnel Hole of Glory. By the way, this drain designed “just in case”, providing that it can required, perhaps not more than once every half a century, and perhaps never needed.

However, apparently, over these decades, the climate in the state became more rainy, but because the Hole of Glory was used already in 1997, then in 2006. But the rainiest was for Northern California recently – twice in two years launched this spillway, and the last time such an event occurred just the other day.

When the morning glory spillway is at work, a lot flocks here people come to even look at this miracle even from abroad. The sight is really magnificent and a little frightening. Pessimists compare this funnel with a giant toilet, optimists see it inverted fountain. In any case, it’s something fantastic, almost unreal, because in nature there is nothing like it …

By the way, we note that Lake Berrissa itself is a popular place for many sports and water recreation, so at the time of launch Holes of Glory local authorities make every effort to none of the people suffered from this. And you can understand these efforts: in 1997, when the giant catchment was launched for the first time, not there was no tragic incident – the maelstrom was tightened and the forty-year-old swimmer Emily Schwalek died.
