Myth: No sheet of paper can be folded in half more than 8 times. (On the in fact, the current record is already 12 times, it belongs Britney Gallivan). But how can a tenth of a millimeter thick sheet become more than the universe?
The answer is simple: exponential growth. Middle sheet thickness paper is 1/10 millimeter. If you fold it perfectly in half, its thickness will double. But then things become really interesting.
A third folding will give you the thickness of a human nail.
Seven folds – and you get a notebook thickness of 128 pages.
10 – and the thickness of the paper will be approximately the width of the palm.
23 – and you get a stack of paper a kilometer high.
30 foldings will take you into space. At this point, your leaflet will have a height of 100 kilometers.
Keep folding. 42 folding will bring you to the moon. 51 – and you will find yourself in the sun.
Now quickly scroll to the 81st folding and get a stack paper with a thickness of 127.786 light years – this is almost equal the diameter of the Andromeda Nebula (which is approximately 141,000 light years).
90 folds will give 130.8 million light years – that’s more than Virgo Supercluster, which has a diameter of approximately 110 million years. The Virgo supercluster contains a local galactic a group that includes the Andromeda Nebula, our own The Milky Way, and about a hundred other galaxies.
And finally, at 103 folding, you go beyond the observed The universe, whose diameter is estimated to be 93 billion light years.
