A photo from open sources, the New York court declared full personalities of two chimpanzees. Leo and Hercules, over whom many years set laboratory experiments, finally they can rest from everyday torment. The verdict in this case was issued by a judge Barbara Jaffe.
Two anthropoid apes of the order of five years did not leave a laboratory where they were kept in captivity for scientific purposes. Representatives US Environmental Organization The Nonhuman Rights Project (Protection of Inhuman Rights) “for a long time sought by the court that chimpanzees be recognized as individuals. Finally it happened. Animal advocates convinced judge that monkeys feel physical and mental pain is no less intense than people, but, meaning painful experiments on them are cruel and barbaric.
According to Barbara Jaffe, recognition of Leo and Hercules as personalities is, unfortunately, an exception to the rule. The judge is confident that someday the legal rights of animals may be recognized in the United States to the full, however, so far talk about it too early. According to American law, laboratory animals are the property of their respective owners and do not have any legal rights other than those that protect them from unreasonable violence.
Opponents of such decisions also remind that, if not test various means and methods on humanoid experimental monkeys, they will have to be tested in humans, and this even more unacceptable in a civilized society.
