The Colossus of Rhodes was, as you know, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A giant statue of Helios – the sun god – stood between 292 and 280 years before the new era in the ancient Greek city of Rhodes, located on the island of the same name in the Aegean Sea. A work of art was destroyed by a strong earthquake, however, forever remained in the memory of mankind as one of the most amazing of his creations.
Young professionals from Rhodes, with the support of European colleagues, prepared a very ambitious project for recreation of the Colossus of Rhodes. They plan to adapt the statue to current era. It is assumed that the restored wonder of the world will give significant boost to the Greek economy. Many engineers architects, archaeologists, historians and economists from Greece, Great Britain, Italy and Spain, who conceived this project, are sure that the construction of a giant statue equipped with an observation deck, library, restaurant and museum – this is a doable task. At the same time, do not forget about the original purpose of the statue – the recreated Colossus of Rhodes will be primarily a lighthouse, so necessary for ships.
The height of the original statue was about thirty-six meters, however, the reconstruction will rise as much as a hundred fifty. In the video below you can get acquainted with the current concept of this architectural creation. According to plan developers, the statue will be covered with solar panels, which will provide all the energy necessary for the operation of the beacon. It must to be very symbolic – the sun god, living exclusively at the expense of solar power. Through the use of modern technology, Helios will not be afraid of any wind and earthquake intensity.
The cost of the project is estimated at least two hundred million Euro, which in the current economic situation in Greece should, to Unfortunately, hit her state budget.
