It is said that a creative person is like God: by the power of his thoughts and fantasies, he – in the pursuit of harmony and perfection – is capable of create amazing things and whole worlds. Especially if his the creative laboratory is nature itself.
German artist creates living pictures by manipulating the roots herbs
Inspired by Charles Darwin’s theory of the rationality of plant of the world, German artist Diana Scherer found a way “negotiate” with the roots of various plants that they grew in a certain way. The results of her work are truly amazing (see photo).

In the book “The ability to move in plants” Charles Darwin argued that although plants are not able to move from those places where they are rooted, their roots actively interact with the environment environment, navigating in space in search of water and the right chemical substances. The scientist called the roots a brain-shaped organ, assuming plants are actually much smarter than they think Most people.

Based on Darwin’s statement about the “root brain” (so far controversial) Diana Scherer conducted an art experiment in which tried to make the roots grow so that they create intricate patterns – stunning living carpets.

The artist grew oats and wheat in specially designed its forms, due to which the roots of plants looking for nutritious substances acquired the desired Scherer appearance. With the help of biologists and environmentalists from the University of Radbaud in Nijmegen, Netherlands (Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherla), Diana successfully “tamed” plant roots, due to which she managed to create living works art.

In the book, “The ability to move in plants,” she says, Darwin describes how the roots not only grow, but consciously move and even watching. The root moves, he knows where the top and bottom are, he feels gravity, localizes moisture and chemicals in it. Darwin found that plants are much smarter than everyone thought. For modern botanists this “matter buried in the earth” is still remains a mystery, although serious research. I want to use the “intelligence” of plants in my work, declares Diana Scherer.

Once the roots finish their movement underground according to artistic design, Scherer unearths forms and photographs ready-made “live tapestries” (see photo).

A unique living book grown by manipulating the roots herbs
In order to popularize the idea of the endless possibilities of rural Irish agency Rothco teamed up with Diana Scherer, so that by manipulating the roots of living plants growing in in the form of letters and diagrams, create a “book that has grown itself.”
All elements of the Book, including ink and binding, have been completed from grass to show every farmer how powerful and the natural process can be unlimited in its possibilities proper management of it. This is the main meaning of the “Book”, which contains 10 simple but valuable lessons designed to help take a fresh look at the possibilities of ordinary grass. And what could be more clearly than such a message grown from this very grass!

At first, even Diana Scherer herself, who oversaw the creation of the Book, which grew during February and March of this year, wondered question: is it possible to solve such an extremely complex problem using only grass seeds, soil, sunlight, water and special forms for root manipulation? After all, this is not at all what to grow “living tapestries”, glorified the German artist. Create conditions so that all letters and diagrams are clear and correct, it was very difficult, but the end result justified the people spent efforts.
The idea to grow a living book on grass management was very simple and at the same time very complex in terms of her implementation, said Rothco creative director Ray Swan (Ray Swan). – We even feared that this was simply impossible, because no one has ever tried to do this before. But we still set off on this amazing journey.

Everything from pages to bookbinding and ink this book is living. It has 22 pages, the format of an unusual “publication” approximately A3 (about 11 by 17 inches), it is quite light and in the same time is very valuable!
The grown “Book” went on a nationwide tour, organized by AIB (Allied Irish Bank), and visited a number of agricultural activities. According to the creators themselves, her need to demonstrate to as many people as possible, and first turn to agricultural workers. Unfortunately she will not eternal, although Rothco employees have already captured unique pages in digital format available on the AIB website. Thank them for this is…
