Researchers from St. Olavs Hospital in Trondheim, Norway, consider that their findings, published in the journal Neuroscience, suggest that meditation is more than just way to get rid of stress.
There are countless methods such as Zen, Buddhist and transcendental meditation. All of them can be divided into two major groups known as concentrating meditation, where the person focuses on breathing and specific thoughts, and non-directional, which allows the mind to wander in its own way discretion.
All study participants practiced the second type of meditation, which in Norway is called ASEM. Use during MRI scanner experiment showed that the part of their brain corresponding to for processing related thoughts and feelings, was more active than in a state of rest. When subjects performed concentrating meditation, activity in this part of the brain was almost the same as with a simple rest.
“I was surprised! Brain activity was greatest when the participants let go of their thoughts, letting them wander on their own, not when the brain worked to maximize concentration, “said Dr. Jian Xu in an interview with the British Mail Online tabloid.
Professor Sven Davenger of the University of Oslo said: “Research has shown that indirect meditation expands the space for processing memories and emotions is much stronger than concentrating meditation.
According to the scientist, this area of the brain has the largest activity when a person is resting and is a kind of a kind of base operating system that takes control on ourselves when external tasks do not require our attention. Professor Davenger is the only regularly meditating member research team and in his opinion a good study depends on the presence of a team that can combine personal experience meditations with a critical attitude to results.
“Millions of people practice meditation. It’s important that we learn how it really works, “he added.
