In the memoirs of some missionaries, you can read about the attempts catch the mermaid. So, a missionary who belonged to the Capuchin Order, said that he saw from the deck of a ship going to Congo like mermaids and newts (sea men) collected algae in shallow water from bottom. The ship anchored, and the sailors quietly lowered the nets, however the underwater inhabitants noticed them and cleverly escaped the trap.
Caught Mermaids
Italian missionary from the city of Pavia, father Francis, in 1701 who visited Angola, at first did not believe the locals when they told him about the mermaids living in the waters of their lake. Then the natives caught one of them on the net and presented it to the preacher in proof of veracity. Missionary examined in detail and described the mermaid in detail, adding that a day after the capture she has died. The question of whether these creatures have a soul remains for the father Francis open, but he was very important, because, in addition to everything else, Angolans hunted mermaids and ate their meat for food. So who did they actually eat: fish or people?

In 1560 the church was as close as ever to the answer to this question. Then off the coast of Mannar Island near Ceylon, the Dutch the sailors at the same time caught seven mermaids! .. Caught in these the edges of the Jesuit fathers did not miss the chance and tried to find out whether these creatures are people endowed with an immortal soul. The researchers debated for a long time, but did not come to unequivocal conclusion.
Much luckier personal doctor of the Dutch Viceroy in Goa M. Bosque, who ended up in the same place. Anatomizing the mermaids caught near Mannar, he concluded that these creatures in everything similar to people – both externally and in their internal structure. It must be assumed that the respected doctor did not cut alive, as everything mermaids placed in large containers of water died later a few days…

The same sad fate befell other “underwater people”, as soon as they fell into captivity. In 1682 near the italian town Sestri (near Genoa) was caught by the so-called “sea man”, and many citizens were able to see it close. One of the witnesses wrote that during the day the prisoner was repeatedly seated on stool, and this indicates that his body is quite flexible and there are joints (unlike fish). “Sea Man” lived only a few days and during all this time I didn’t eat or drink anything, but only cried and let out plaintive cries …

At the beginning of 1738 in the newspaper London Daily Post appeared message: in the bay near the town of Topsham (county Devon) caught mermaid. She was subsequently shown to the public in Exeter, Bristol and Bath. It is not known how long this unfortunate creature lived in captivity and what happened to him afterwards.
According to the evidence that came to us from the past, mermaids in the seas met not so rare, but people considered them outlandish creatures. It is not surprising that when in 1531. in the waters of the Baltic the sea caught the mermaid, she was immediately sent as a gift to the king of Poland Sigismund II. The ruler and his court saw the captive with their own eyes, only, unfortunately, not for long: she died in captivity on the third day…
Mermaids in captivity
In 1430 in Holland the dam was washed away, and the sea was flooded by large territory, why residents had to move in boats. One morning, the girls from the small town of Edam set off like this way to milk the cows. In shallow water, they saw a mermaid stuck in dirt. The girls took her into a boat and then brought her home. The mermaid stayed with them and lived for the whole … 15 years! To speak she True, I didn’t learn, but I learned to wear a dress, there’s how man and knit. In addition, the good Catholics taught their ward to worship the holy cross, and this gave reason to bury her christian.

But if there are only records about this mermaid, then from another even a portrait was preserved, which was written by the “famous Sue Gauthier.” In 1758 in Paris, the mermaid was put on public display, placed in a large aquarium, at the fair in Saint-Germain. As he wrote an eyewitness, a captive was fed fish and bread. She was very mobile and splashed in water with pleasure. Resting mermaid in upright position. Appearance was vile and ugly. (FROM it’s hard to disagree when looking at Gauthier’s drawing.)
It should be said that the descriptions of the mermaids do not differ too much between themselves, despite the fact that eyewitnesses are separated by centuries or thousand kilometers distance.
Caught mermaids were often released
One English record mentions a “sea man”, which in 1187 caught in Suffolk County. It is not known how much he spent time in captivity, but then somehow escaped from captivity. The fugitive rushed into the sea waves, and was no longer seen. But it also happened when the catchers themselves released the captured “sea people”.
In 1619 two Danish royal advisers sailed to Sweden from Norway. Suddenly, they saw on board some humanoid a creature sailing parallel to their ship. The sailors hid in a hunk bacon hook attached to a solid twine and cast bait in water. Caught on her “marine man” was pulled onto the deck. However, he screamed so loudly and this scream was so menacing that frightened sailors hurried to throw their captive back in water.

Sometimes fishermen released unexpected prey. Once this happened near one of the Shetland islands. Edinburgh magazine reported that a mermaid had fallen into the fishing net. She was grayish in color, without any scales on the tail. Fishermen holding his captive in the boat for some time, they decided that from her better get rid. After all, if something happens later in the sea misfortune, blame those who tormented the unfortunate creature …

Probably, six of their “colleagues” from Yell Island thought the same way, which in 1833. had to meet a mermaid. She got confused in the net that the fishermen took out. As they later said, the growth of the mermaid was about three feet. There were no gills on the body, just like on the tail – scales. The captive did not resist people and only plaintively moaned. After keeping her for three hours in a boat, the fishermen released the mermaid in sea. Diving, she immediately went into the depths.
Mermaids of Russia
In Russia, sometimes also caught mermaids – “river” or “meadow” – as follows from the stories, tailless. In a record made in 1891. according to the peasants, it was said that once upon a time (they know this from the elderly) two mermaids were brought to the village. These creatures looked like women with long hair. Saying nothing, they only wept bitterly. When the mermaids were released, they sang, began to play and ran into the forest.

At one time, V.I.Dal also recorded a story about one such catch. Events took place in the village, which the peasants called The monastery and which stood on the shore of a large lake. Once upon a time long ago, men pulled nets from the lake of a child. When he was lowered into water, the child frolic and played, and when brought to the hut – languished and cried. A man who caught a strange kid once said to him: listen, I won’t start to torment you anymore, let me go back, only you serve me. I’ll put the nets in the evening, and you catch fish in them more. The child sitting on the sixth trembled, his eyes sparkled with joy. A man put strong nets on the lake, he put the little boy in a tub, brought ashore and threw it into the lake. In the morning came to inspect the net, and it is full of fish!

Mermaids are seen today, however, less and less, and even catch … Either they gradually die out in the ponds that are so intensely poisons our civilization, or have become more cautious, seeing what perfect technologies for catching marine animals possessed by modern man. Or maybe the fault is another: we ceased to believe in mermaids, compose poems and songs about them, as did our ancestors, and therefore forever lost touch with their world, which may only come in contact with our physical reality. However, there are researchers who are serious deal with this problem, and they have evidence that “water people” actually exist …
