In the Portuguese city of Sintra there is a magnificent the palace and park complex Quinta da Regaleira, where an ancient castle and a unique chapel is surrounded by the same old park with luxurious lakes, fountains, wells, grottoes and numerous sculptural compositions.

Among this splendor of antiquity, the mysterious Well of Initiation, which is also called the inverted tower Masons. This pit tower is called 27 meters deep so mysteriously penetrating is far from accidental: here, according to legend, held the main Masonic rite of initiation – initiation new member to this secret society.

The entrance to the well is protected by chthonic penumbra, as if appearing here from the world of shadows. And then comes the amazing screw a staircase with unusual railings, which due to the moss covering them, seem outlandish, and the descent itself is almost fabulous. Every turn this unique staircase symbolizes the circles of hell and paradise (in depending on the direction of movement along it).

And at the very bottom of this inverted tower, on the tiled floor depicted an octagonal star. It was here that ended Masonic ritual and then through a stone door leading to the underground the tunnel gathered at this sacrament went outside.

Today almost the same tourists are doing, with that only the difference is that they just look at this fantastic structure, created at the beginning of the last century, admire and often ask the most ridiculous questions that even an experienced one cannot answer guide. And only a piece of blue sky, peeping even from the bottom of this strange well, reassuring encourages people caught in this deep stone “tower” …
