The other day, the mission “Collection of deep-sea samples” to research vessel Investigator. International group scientists studying deep ecosystems along the eastern coast of the australian continent, has collected approximately a thousand samples of marine fauna, while a third of them were unknown science. New species immediately attracted the attention of specialists.
Among the fish caught there were also many famous, but little-known species – for example, lizard fish, coffin fish and drop fish. The expedition lasted a whole month, and during this time, experts sailed a long way along the ocean shelf, exploring ecosystems and underwater relief from Tasmania to Brisbane. Research carried out at sea depths from 2.5 to 4 kilometers using special deep-sea cameras. Scientists caught samples using fishing nets, trawls and boxes for collecting bottom soil. Some creatures that lived shallowly came across even then, when the nets were pulled to the surface.
During the mission, the most diverse and bizarre water bodies were caught. the inhabitants. The aforementioned drop fish looking like a jelly-like a thick dwarf with a dull face, caught at a depth of 2500 meters. Recall that 4 years ago she was recognized as the ugliest creature on Earth and even made the mascot of the Organization for the Protection of the Ugly animals. Red coffin fish, belonging to the Haunax family, got into the network at a depth of 1 kilometer. A lizard fish devouring everything in its path, including relatives, was caught at a depth of 3.5 kilometers.
Researchers have discovered a new kind of echinoderm ophiur. Underwater cameras also revealed a little-known muzzleless fish longer than 20 centimeters, which have no eyes, mouth, scales, as well as ventral and caudal fins. This creature met a person before, but recent records of observation for fish without a muzzle date back to 1873. This “lack of fish” was noticed then in the Coral Sea near New Guinea.
