At the Valdai lake in the Novgorod region at the moment a very rare and beautiful natural phenomenon, characteristic for Russian winter. Almost the entire surface of the reservoir was covered amazing ice crystals similar from a distance to some fantastic flowers. Local photographers rushed to capture “phenomenon” on their cameras. Interested in what happened and domestic experts who gave the “icy flowering” scientific explanation.

According to them, such an unusual phenomenon is observed in a number of conditions. Thin young ice on the lake and calm weather. Air temperature should be below minus 20 degrees, and the temperature on the surface of the reservoir is about zero. It leads to to the fact that at the very surface of the ice appears oversaturated with moisture layer. In contact with cold air, the moisture cools sharply and condenses in the form of crystals several centimeters high – so, they say, these fabulously beautiful icy flowers appear.

Alas, this splendor is short-lived. Worth the thickness of the ice on the lake increase as the temperature above it compares with the temperature air, and the “flowers” disappear. Despite the fact that on Valdai Lake this is not the first time this phenomenon has been observed, it is always so fleetingly, that many locals have never seen him. Even some old-timers, looking at the photographs presented, admitted that they had never seen such beauty here firsthand.
