An international team of scientists claims to have found rational explanation of how the ancient Roman clergy managed to go unscathed through the so-called “Gates to hell”, while the animals sacrificed by the priests fell dead, as if by magic. Similar cult structures, usually located near the temples, were found in many places in the Mediterranean. According to the findings specialists, mysterious deaths associated with local geological processes, that is, no mysticism is involved here.
Scientists examined the stone entrance to a small cave on territory of the ancient Turkish city of Pamukkale. “Gates to Hell” were hollowed out at one time in one of the walls surrounding a rectangular arena.
