The image was made up of dozens of shots taken spacecraft after completion of drilling in a sand crater Gale. Curiosity took a selfie at the end of 1126 Martian days (or sol, equal to 24 hours and 40 minutes) of your stay on surface of the red planet. A message about this was posted on NASA official website.

Selfie shots were taken on October 6, 2015 by a manipulator arm rover using the scientific tool MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager). In the image, the diameter of the bicycle wheel is 50 centimeters, and the diameter of the hole made by the rover (it is noticeable in the lower left corner of the selfie) is equal to 1.6 centimeters.
