This tropical island in the Arctic Ocean at the beginning of XIX century described the Russian merchant and explorer of the Novosibirsk Islands Jacob Sannikov, who was distinguished by a penetrating mind, huge energy and great honesty. So suspect this person in some fantasies and fakes, as they say now, are simply impossible. According to the experienced polar traveler, who before discovered the islands of Stolbovoy and Faldeevsky, the promised land among ice was located north of the island of Kotelny.

True, Yakov Sannikov himself saw this tropical island from afar – into the spyglass from the Novosibirsk Islands. However in confirmation of his words is usually given by the surviving information that at that time, birds were flying north from the mainland in spring, and in autumn they came back with offspring, that is, it turns out that the birds nested somewhere, hatched, and then fed chicks …

Therefore, many tried to find the legendary Sannikov Land travelers such as Edward Toll, Fridtjof Nansen, Soviet Academician and writer Vladimir Obruchev, who immortalized legends about her in his eponymous science fiction novel, which later a wonderful film was shot where the tropical island of Sannikov represented the fantastic Valley of geysers of Kamchatka.

By the way, at the request of Obruchev in 1937, the Soviet icebreaker “Sadko” almost rounded the island of Kotelny, but the mysterious land never found. A little later Soviet planes were sent here Arctic aviation. The result is the same, after which it was officially recognized that Sannikov Land does not exist.

Sannikov’s land could well have been

Then what did the Yakut merchant Jacob see? At one time, scientists made the assumption that a theoretically tropical oasis among ice could arise if at that time it was surrounded by ice, in the basin of which established a unique microclimate, plus geysers – and here you have the Sannikov Land. However, as in the novel Obrucheva, something was broken in that fragile world – and tropical the island gradually or even instantly disappeared.

Today, independent researchers go much further in their assumptions about Sannikov Land, since recent discoveries allow us to speak, for example, of parallel worlds, one of which could see the polar traveler at the beginning of the XIX century. Or vice versa, a fantastic island actually existed (after all, they flew somewhere birds), and then “failed” in a parallel world: such there are many examples where villages, islands and lakes disappeared. And time so, then the Sannikov Land may well exist somewhere still since And it’s possible that there are still lucky ones who will visit this mythical island and even come back, thereby proving that Jacob Sannikov did not see that tropical paradise among the ice. However, in the veracity of the allegations of the Russian merchant and traveler no one ever doubted …
