An international group of geologists found out how the ancient continent – Big Adria appeared and subsequently disappeared. The remains of this continent can be seen on the surface in different parts of Europe.

Scientists have developed a model that allowed to recreate the story changes in the large land mass formed around 240 million years ago and now literally under Europe.

Geologists have long had assumptions about the once existing Big Adria. In the mountain ranges of southern Europe, geologists previously found strange rocks and limestones. Experts have found that with from the very beginning, these rocks were marine sediments that in as a result of the collision, tectonic plates were torn from the bottom and raised to the surface. Earlier studies have already shown that these rocks are the remains of an ancient large continent.

About 240 million years ago, Big Adria broke away from the supercontinent Gondwana. At that time, Gandwana included modern Africa, Australia, Antarctica, South America, Indian subcontinent. The newly formed continent began a slow movement in heading north.

About 140 million years ago Big Adria in size was comparable to modern Greenland. Part of the territory of this the ancient continent was immersed in a tropical sea in which sedimentary rocks gradually turned into rocky education.

120-100 million years ago, the ancient continent faced with Europe, broke up into fragments and gradually went under it.

Earlier ESOREITER talked about the missing continent of Mu – Atlantis of the Pacific Ocean.
