The man who has been building a huge cathedral for 53 years. By oneself

Few of us have been working on the same job all our lives. AND very few who are able to spend their lives on one and only own project. Spaniard Justo Gallego Martinez is one such freak. Martinez is now 88 years old, and 53 of these, he spent on the construction of a large cathedral in Madrid.

Construction began in 1961, on a piece of land inherited Martinez from parents. Here he is the only designer, engineer, and working. Material for construction is everything that works out to get – old bricks, barrels – any rubbish. But sometimes local enterprises donate some building materials to him.

The general plan for the construction of the cathedral on paper does not exist, he, according to the author of the project “in his head”.

Martinez already bequeathed his brainchild to the Catholic Church and hopes that at least after his death church will be held here service.

Public attitude to this peculiar architectural the feat is twofold: skeptics insist on putting an end to endless construction and demolish everything, others, on the contrary, believe that even in its unfinished form the cathedral attracts tourists and is worthy in order to declare it an architectural monument (some sympathetic professional architects even offer Martinez free consultation).
