Like all acetones, it is a volatile liquid, that is, instantly spreading through the air. In its chemical structure, it pretty simple – CH3-CS-CH3, but in terms of stink place in the world.
The earliest attempt to obtain thioacetone was made in far 1889 by German scientists from Freiburg. This case has entered into history, since a chronicle of its consequences has been preserved. By the city, contemporaries wrote, went such a sickening smell that people started to faint, which is why the residents of the city had to urgently evacuate.
The following thioacetone incident occurred in Oxford in 1967 the year the Esso team of scientists experimented with this substance in a closed laboratory, but during work from a flask, where there was a stinky liquid, for a moment jumped out bung. Two or three seconds, until the cork was returned to its place, it was enough that not only the lab workers, but everyone, who was near her in a radius of two hundred meters, attacks began vomiting
There was another funny case related to thioacetone. Two chemists carried out some experiments involving miniscule the amount of this stinky substance, so small that they themselves didn’t even feel anything. But when laboratory assistants at lunch time break went to the nearest restaurant, then they almost thrown into the street, because they terribly carried some muck, as the regulars of the drinking establishment determined. And only thanks resourcefulness of the waitress who sprayed young people deodorant, they were able to dine quietly.
Scientists recently conducted an interesting experiment to determine the strength of the stinkiness of thioacetone. They put a tiny drop substances on the glass and put it in a fume hood, after which tried to smell at a distance of half a kilometer. Almost everyone volunteers immediately became dizzy and appeared vomiting cramps, after which the experimenters tried as quickly as possible leave the danger zone of thioacetone.
Here is such a terrible and smelly thioacetone. True, he has one plus: it polymerizes quite quickly in completely odor neutral liquid – tritioacetone. Nature made sure that such a sickening and strong smell does not last long remained in the atmosphere and did not kill anything living on earth.
