Scientists from the USA are sure that the ancient Mayans were very warlike and bloodthirsty than historians had previously believed. During the battles in whom they participated, entire cities were burned along with their by the inhabitants. It is reported by Phys.org.
Scientists discovered a thick layer of charcoal, which dated 697 AD, looks uncharacteristic for ordinary fires. Archaeologists believe that such a layer could form in as a result of the attack on the Mayan city of Vitsnu. During attack scorched earth tactics were used in which fields were burned and other resources, and the affected population of the city remained weakened.
1,500 years ago, during the heyday of the Mayan culture, between rival dynasties were constantly fighting. Purpose hostilities was ransom for captured members ruling families. Arisen at a later stage of development Mayan civilization depletion of resources led to the most brutal wars and the subsequent fall of cultural communities around 1000 ad.
Scientists also reported that this discovery clearly shows that the ancient Mayans were violent for a 650 year period wars from which the civilian population suffered.
